Every airline BackFare watches lets you capture at least some price drops, but how differs. The regular fares at American, Delta, Southwest and United return the difference as credit with no change fee. Alaska stopped adjusting fares around October 7, 2026, so a drop there means cancelling and rebooking. Basic fares mostly can't be changed. Each airline's section says when we last checked its rules. Anything marked Unverified hasn't been confirmed yet, so check with the airline. Rules change: look at your airline's own page before you cancel anything. Found something out of date, or did your airline handle it differently? Let us know at support@backfare.app.
At a glance
Regular fares at most airlines can be repriced for free; the savings usually come back as airline credit, not cash.
| Airline | Fare | How to get a lower price | What you get back | Credit lasts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alaska | Main, First | Cancel, then rebook (no price adjustments since about Oct 7, 2026) | Full value as Wallet credit | 12 months from the original ticket |
| Alaska | Saver | Can't be changed: cancel 14+ days before departure, then rebook | Half the ticket value as credit | 12 months from the original ticket |
| American | Main Cabin and up | Change to the same flight; if blocked, ask an agent or cancel and rebook | Trip Credit, no change fee on trips from the Americas | 12 months for AAdvantage members, 6 for others |
| American | Basic Economy | Can't be changed: cancel, then rebook | Credit minus $99 (48 states), $129 (Hawaii, Alaska, nearby), $199 (long-haul) | 12 months (members) |
| Delta | Classic fares (Main, Comfort, First, Premium Select, Delta One) | Change to the same flight in the same fare level | eCredit, no fee on trips from the US or Canada | 1 year from the original ticket |
| Delta | Basic, bought on or after Nov 6, 2025 | Change for a fee | eCredit minus $99 (US and nearby) or $199 (other international) | 1 year from the original ticket |
| Southwest | Choice | Change to the same flight | Transferable flight credit | 12 months from booking |
| Southwest | Choice Preferred, Choice Extra | Change to the same flight | Refund to your card, or credit if you prefer | 12 months from booking (credit) |
| Southwest | Basic | Can't be changed: cancel, then rebook | Flight credit for the full fare | 6 months from booking |
| United | Economy and up (Standard fares) | Change to the same flight; if blocked, ask chat to reprice | Future flight credit, no change fee on trips from the US | About 1 year; go by the date on the credit |
| United | Basic Economy; Polaris and Premium Plus Base | Can't be changed | Basic: partial credit if cancelled (fee Unverified). Base: Unverified | Not applicable |
Before you start
Seven rules hold on every airline here.
- Compare like with like. Same flight, same fare type, same number of travelers. A cheaper price is often only in Basic, which you can't move into without losing flexibility.
- Booked in the last 24 hours? Cancel for a full refund to your card, then rebook. This is the only sure way to get cash back. Fine print varies: American, Southwest and United require booking at least 7 days before departure; Alaska at least 24 hours; Delta allows until midnight of the day after purchase.
- Try a change before a cancel. Changing to the same flight keeps your seat and your booking. Cancel and rebook only when the change is blocked.
- If you cancel, rebook right away. The lower fare and your seat aren't held between the two steps.
- Expect credit, not cash. The difference comes back as airline credit, except Southwest Choice Preferred and Choice Extra, and refundable fares.
- Cancelling loses extras. Paid seats, Southwest Priority Boarding and upgrade waitlist spots can be lost.
- Booked through Expedia or a travel agent? Changes usually go through them, and some airlines add a fee.
BackFare only tells you about a drop. It never rebooks for you: American's Conditions of Carriage forbid automated rebooking by any third party.
Alaska
Last checked October 13, 2026
Alaska no longer gives the difference back when a fare drops: its Lowest Fare page (updated Oct 2, 2026) says it "can't apply price adjustments after purchase," and its agents won't adjust a price "based solely on subsequent fare decreases." News reports date the change to about October 7, 2026. The "no change fees" on Main and First (Alaska's change page) covers switching to a different flight; it doesn't refund a drop on the flight you already hold. A drop on Main or First now means cancelling for Wallet credit and rebooking; Saver gets half back.
| Fare | Change it? | Same flight gets cheaper |
|---|---|---|
| Saver | No (only same-day changes, for a fee) | Cancel 14+ days before departure for half the ticket value as credit (tickets bought on or after July 19, 2023); later, nothing back |
| Main | Yes, no change fee | No adjustment: cancel for the full value as Wallet credit, then rebook |
| First | Same as Main | Same as Main |
| Premium | A seat upgrade on a Main or Saver ticket, not its own fare | Follows the underlying fare; the upgrade itself is usually non-refundable |
| Awards (Atmos Rewards) | Change or cancel online | Cancel (points back, taxes refunded), then rebook; no mileage adjustments |
Steps for Main, same flight, now cheaper
- Booked in the last 24 hours, at least 24 hours before departure? Cancel for a refund to your card, then rebook. This is the only way to get cash.
- On alaskaair.com, confirm the lower fare is on the same flight, in the same fare type, for everyone.
- Check for blockers first: booked through an agency (go back to them); a discount code (forfeited on cancel); someone already checked in; more than 7 travelers; pets or special requests (call; agent bookings cost $30 per person).
- Optional: try changing to the same flight in Manage trip to see whether a credit appears (reports say it no longer does; Unverified).
- Sign in, find the reservation, and Cancel. The value goes to your Wallet.
- Rebook right away and apply Wallet funds at payment.
- Pick seats again and re-add any upgrade waitlist; cancelling releases them.
Gotchas
- Credit lasts 12 months from the original ticket or 30 days after you cancel, whichever is later; it's a book-by date.
- Credit is non-transferable, only usable on alaskaair.com or hawaiianairlines.com, and can't pay fees.
- Companion Fare codes: an unexpired code comes back on cancel; Wallet funds may not pay for Companion Fare tickets (Alaska's pages conflict).
- A no-show forfeits everything.

Main Cabin and up change for free on trips that start in the Americas, and the difference comes back as a Trip Credit. Basic Economy can't be changed.
Which fare do you have? American's receipts often call Main Cabin just "Economy." If yours says "Basic Economy," or the booking code next to Economy is B, it's Basic Economy. Otherwise it's Main Cabin, the fare BackFare shows as Main.
Main Cabin: how to get the lower price
- On aa.com: Manage trips, Change trip, "Yes, I want to change this flight." Search the same route and date and pick the flights you already have, in Main. The difference comes back as a Trip Credit.
- If your flights can't be selected, call American and ask an agent to reprice the same flights at today's fare, as a Trip Credit. A change made by phone can carry a $50 fee.
Full steps and gotchas are below the tables.
| Fare | Change it? | Same flight gets cheaper |
|---|---|---|
| Basic Economy | No (trips from Europe can, for a fee) | Cancel for credit minus $99 (48 states), $129 (Hawaii, Alaska, nearby international) or $199 (long-haul); members, booked directly in the US |
| Main Cabin, Main Plus | Yes; free from the Americas, up to $400 elsewhere | Trip Credit |
| Main Select, Flexible fares (refundable) | Yes, free | Cancel for a refund to your card, then rebook |
| Premium Economy, Business, First (non-refundable) | Same as Main Cabin | Trip Credit |
| Awards (AAdvantage) | Yes, no fee | Miles go back and the new price is charged, so you net the difference |
Two kinds of credit
| Credit | You get it when | Who can use it | Lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trip Credit | You change a ticket, or cancel on aa.com or the app | Anyone (the holder books for anyone) | 12 months for AAdvantage members, 6 for others |
| Flight Credit | You cancel any other way (phone, agent) | Only the named traveler | Travel must begin within 1 year of the original ticket |
Steps for Main Cabin and up
- Booked in the last 24 hours, at least 7 days out? Cancel for a card refund and rebook.
- Check that self-service is open: not paid with a Trip Credit, voucher or gift card; not booked through AA Vacations or an agency; no partner-operated flights; not checked in.
- On aa.com: Manage trips, Change trip, "Yes, I want to change this flight," search the same route and date, pick your flight, review the credit, submit.
- If your flight can't be selected (reported Nov 2025 and Aug 2026): ask an agent to reprice it and ask specifically for a Trip Credit; or cancel on aa.com or the app with your AAdvantage number on the booking, then rebook.
Gotchas
- Cash plus miles bookings can't be changed; cancel and rebook.
- Don't book the new ticket before cancelling the old one; American can treat it as a duplicate booking.
- Changes made by phone can carry a $50 assistance fee.

Every Delta cabin now comes as Basic, Classic or Extra. Classic changes for free on trips from the US or Canada, and a change keeps the same level: a Main Classic ticket can only capture a lower Main Classic price, never a Main Basic price.
Main Classic: how to get the lower price
- On delta.com or the Fly Delta app: My Trips, the trip, Change or Add Flights. Search the same date and pick your flights. The difference comes back as an eCredit.
- If your flight shows only as "Original Flight" and can't be selected, use Message Us in the app or call, and ask an agent to reprice the same flights at today's fare.
Full steps and gotchas are below the table.
| Fare | Change fee (trips from the US or Canada) | Same flight gets cheaper |
|---|---|---|
| Main Basic, Comfort Basic | $99 (US, Canada, Mexico, Caribbean, Central America); $199 other international. Basic bought before Nov 6, 2025 can't be changed | eCredit minus the fee |
| First, Premium Select, Delta One Basic | $300, $400, $500 | eCredit minus the fee |
| Classic fares | Free | eCredit |
| Extra and refundable fares | Free | eCredit per Delta's general rule; a 2022 guide says refund to card (Unverified) |
| Awards (SkyMiles), Classic, from the US or Canada | Free | Full miles back on cancel; repricing a lower award price Unverified |
Trips that start outside the US or Canada pay fees even on Classic: for example €150 on Main Classic from Europe, $200 from Mexico, $330 from South America. The drop has to beat the fee.
Steps for Main Classic
- Check the price like for like: the same flights, date and number of travelers, in Main Classic, not Basic.
- On delta.com or the Fly Delta app: My Trips, the trip, Change or Add Flights, search the same date, pick your flight, confirm. Delta issues the difference as an eCredit.
- If your flight shows only as "Original Flight" and can't be selected (recent reports; Unverified which is current), use Message Us in the app or call, and ask an agent to reprice the same flights at today's fare.
- Check the eCredit on the receipt email and under your profile's eCredits.
Gotchas
- eCredits last one year from the original ticket for voluntary changes; go by the date printed on the credit.
- Redeeming an eCredit needs the original traveler's name.
- At most 2 eCredits combine on a change, 5 on a new purchase.
- Travel agency tickets: extra fees, and most eCredits can't be used through agencies.
- Basic awards change for a fee in miles (9,900 to 19,900); Miles plus Cash refunds the cash part as miles.

No fare has a change fee. Choice and up can be repriced in place; Basic can only be cancelled and rebooked. Southwest renamed its fares in 2025: Basic was Wanna Get Away, Choice was Wanna Get Away Plus, Choice Preferred was Anytime, Choice Extra was Business Select.
| Fare | Change it? | Same flight gets cheaper | Credit lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | No | Cancel for flight credit, then rebook | 6 months from booking |
| Choice | Yes, no fee | Transferable flight credit | 12 months from booking; transferable once to another Rapid Rewards member |
| Choice Preferred | Yes, no fee | Refund to your card, or credit if you prefer | 12 months from booking (credit) |
| Choice Extra | Yes, no fee | Refund to your card, or credit if you prefer | 12 months from booking (credit) |
| Points (Choice tiers) | Yes, no fee | Points back to the account that paid | Points don't expire |
Steps for Choice and up
- Search the same date, route and number of travelers, and check the price in the same fare type.
- Open the reservation (Manage reservation; the app's exact labels are Unverified).
- Tap Change, pick the leg, and select all passengers.
- Pick the same flight in the same fare. The review screen shows a negative amount.
- Choice Preferred and Choice Extra: choose a refund to your card or credit, if offered.
- Confirm. The credit shows under your account's travel funds. Repeat whenever the price drops again.
Basic
- Within 24 hours of booking (booked at least a week out): cancel for a full refund to your card, then rebook.
- After that: cancel at least 10 minutes before departure for a 6-month credit, then rebook right away. Cancelling more than 6 months after booking returns nothing.
- A round trip with any Basic leg can only be cancelled as a whole, so one leg's drop puts the other leg's price at risk.
- Southwest's change tool hid lower Basic prices in a July 2026 test (with points). Search from the home page to see them.
Gotchas
- Act at least 10 minutes before the original departure, or the money can be forfeited.
- Repricing into Basic locks the ticket and shortens future credits to 6 months.
- A Companion Pass companion has to be cancelled before you change your own flight, then rebooked.
- Paid Priority Boarding is forfeited on any change or cancellation.
- Unverified: whether your assigned seat carries over when you reprice the same flight.

Economy and up change for free on trips that start in the US; a lower price comes back as a future flight credit, never cash. Basic Economy and the new Base fares can't be changed.
| Fare | Change it? | Same flight gets cheaper |
|---|---|---|
| Basic Economy | No, unless you pay to add Economy benefits in My Trips (price not published) | Cancel for partial credit; fee Unverified (a 2022 guide says $49.50 each way domestic, $99.50 international) |
| Economy, Economy Plus, Premium Plus, Business, Polaris, First (Standard fares) | Yes; no fee on domestic trips and international trips starting in the US | Future flight credit for the difference |
| Flexible (refundable) fares | Yes | Cancel for a refund to your card, then rebook |
| Polaris Base, Premium Plus Base (since April 2026; long-haul, transcon, some Hawaii) | No | Not possible; cancel terms Unverified |
| Awards (MileagePlus) | Yes, no fees | Miles back; taxes back to your card |
Steps for Economy and up
- Check that the lower price is in your fare (United Economy, not Basic Economy) for every traveler.
- Booked in the last 24 hours, at least 7 days before departure? Cancel in My Trips for a cash refund and rebook.
- Otherwise: My Trips, the trip, Change flight, then pick your same flight at the new price. United issues a travel credit for the difference.
- If your flight doesn't appear or shows as unavailable (common), use United chat in the app and ask them to reprice the ticket at today's fare and issue the difference as a future flight credit.
- Last resort: cancel for a full future flight credit and rebook with it. The credit can take a while to appear, and the fare can move in between.
Credits
- Only the ticketed traveler can use a future flight credit.
- It's a travel-by date: the trip must start before it. United says credits expire one year after issue in most cases; some guides say one year from the original ticket. Go by the date on the credit.
When United changes your flight
- A schedule change of more than 30 minutes lets you move to another United flight leaving within 24 hours of the original time, for free. That doesn't return money.
- A cancelled flight normally means a refund on request. But since December 2025 the DOT isn't enforcing that for renumbered flights without a significant change (3+ hours domestic, a different airport, an extra connection or a downgrade), through July 7, 2027.
- Worth asking anyway: United's own refund page still lists a cancelled flight as a reason for a refund. Ask chat for a refund first; if refused, ask for a reprice at today's fare as future flight credit. Don't buy a new ticket until a refund is confirmed.

Back to topPoints and miles
Award bookings are the friendliest case: every airline returns the points with no fee on its regular awards.
| Airline | When the award price drops | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Alaska | Cancel (points back, taxes refunded), then rebook | No mileage adjustments; partner award fees ($20 per person each way) aren't refunded |
| American | Change trip: miles go back and the new price is charged | Online changes need a one-passenger, American-operated, domestic booking; otherwise cancel and rebook (free). Cash plus miles can't be changed |
| Delta | Classic awards from the US or Canada: change or cancel free, full miles back | Basic awards cost 9,900 to 19,900 miles to change; awards from abroad $150 to redeposit; award prices can lag cash drops by 12 to 24 hours |
| Southwest | Choice tiers: change to the same flight; points go back to the account that paid. Basic: cancel (points back), then rebook | The change tool can hide lower Basic award prices; search from the home page. Only the member whose points paid can change it |
| United | Change in My Trips or cancel and rebook; miles back, taxes to your card, no fees | The same flight may not be selectable; move to another flight and back, or cancel and rebook. Compare prices signed in (cardmember discounts change the price) |
