What we collect

BackFare is designed to collect as little personal data as possible. The data we do collect is what's necessary for the app to function:

Forwarded emails

If you forward a booking confirmation to trips@mail.backfare.app, our parser extracts the trip details (flight numbers, dates, confirmation code, price) and does not keep the original email. The extracted trip waits on our server until you add it in the app, and is deleted within a day after that, or after 14 days if you never open it.

If our parser can't read an airline email, we let you know so you can add the trip by hand. If you have turned on Read unrecognized emails with AI in the app's Settings, we instead send the email's text to an AI service to pull out the trip details: we use OpenRouter, which passes it to the model provider (currently Google or OpenAI). This is off unless you turn it on, and you can turn it off at any time. We keep an email we couldn't read for up to 7 days so we can fix the parser, then delete it along with your email address.

Subscriptions

If you subscribe to BackFare Pro, Apple processes the payment. Apple tells us your subscription status (which plan, when it renews or ends, and Apple's transaction ID) so the app can unlock Pro. We never see your payment details.

Donations

If you choose to support development via BuyMeACoffee, your payment is processed by BuyMeACoffee and Stripe. BackFare never sees or stores your payment card information.

What we don't do

Data retention

Trip data persists on our server until you remove the trip from the app or uninstall. Deleting a trip in the app removes it from local storage and from server-side polling.
